What Is Growth?

Growth is a journey of understanding ourselves.

It begins when we start asking deeper questions:

  • Who am I?
  • What influences the way I think and behave?
  • Why do I respond to situations the way I do?
  • How do my behaviours affect other people?
  • Are those impacts positive or negative?

True growth happens when we are willing to honestly reflect on ourselves, understand the root causes of our behaviours, and take intentional steps to improve. It requires self-awareness, reflection, humility and the courage to change.

What I Have Learned About Myself

For many years, I believed I was a good person and did not spend much time thinking about personal growth. My focus was simply on doing the right thing, supporting others and living according to my values.

I grew up in India, surrounded by strong cultural and Christian values. These values taught me kindness, service, respect and the importance of helping others. They shaped who I am and continue to guide many of my decisions today.

I was comfortable within my familiar world of family, work and close friends. Although I always had positive relationships with people from different cultures and admired the qualities I saw in others, I rarely stepped outside my comfort zone to build deeper connections beyond the circles I already knew.

I also carried a strong insecurity about my English skills. Although I had the ability and experience to contribute, I often worried about how I would communicate, how others might perceive me and whether I could express myself as confidently as others.

With family responsibilities, raising children, managing a household and focusing on work, I never really questioned these patterns. I simply continued living within what felt familiar and comfortable.

That changed when I went through a challenging experience that forced me to reflect more deeply on myself.

Instead of only asking, “Why is this happening to me?”, I slowly began asking a different question:

“What can this experience teach me about myself?”

That question became the beginning of my growth journey.

Understanding Personality Differences

One of the first things I discovered was that people see and experience the world differently.

After exploring personality frameworks, I identified most closely with the INTJ, or Architect, personality type.

This helped me realise that people do not always behave differently because they are right or wrong. They may simply have different perspectives, motivations, strengths, communication styles and challenges.

Understanding this has helped me become less judgemental and more curious. Instead of immediately focusing on someone’s behaviour, I now try to understand what may be influencing it.

Understanding the Influence of Culture and Values

I also became more aware of how deeply culture, upbringing and personal values influence our behaviour.

My Indian cultural background and Christian values have given me many strengths. They taught me to care for others, respect people, serve, work hard and support those around me.

However, I also began to recognise that some of the beliefs and habits I developed could sometimes hold me back, particularly in my professional life.

This was an important realisation for me.

Something can be a strength in one situation and become a limitation when it is taken to an extreme.

Learning the Importance of Boundaries

For most of my life, I believed that saying “yes” was the right thing to do.

As a Christian, I wanted to help people and believed that serving others meant being available whenever possible. I also grew up with the belief that saying no, particularly to elders or people in authority, could be seen as disrespectful.

Over time, I realised that constantly saying yes could lead to people-pleasing, taking on too much and neglecting my own priorities.

I began to understand that setting healthy boundaries is not selfish.

Boundaries allow us to be responsible for our time, energy and commitments. They help us support others wisely rather than trying to carry everything ourselves.

I can still be kind. I can still serve others. I can still live according to my Christian values.

But I am learning that I can also say no when necessary.

Recognising the Impact of Cultural Expectations

As I reflected more deeply, I began to recognise patterns that I had never noticed before.

I sometimes avoided difficult conversations because I did not want to disappoint others or create conflict. I sometimes took on too much instead of clearly communicating my limits. I sometimes hesitated to advocate for myself or speak confidently about what I wanted.

For many years, I did not recognise these behaviours as barriers to my growth.

I simply thought, “This is who I am.”

But growth taught me something important:

Understanding who we are does not mean we cannot change.

Our past may explain some of our behaviours, but it does not have to define our future.

Leaving My Comfort Zone

One of my biggest discoveries was recognising how long I had remained inside my comfort zone.

I invested heavily in my family, my work and my daily responsibilities. These were all important, but I never spent very little time intentionally developing myself.

I wanted greater opportunities and career growth, yet I was not always challenging myself to grow into those opportunities.

I wanted to become more confident, but I avoided situations that made me feel uncomfortable.

I wanted to improve my communication, but I worried about making mistakes.

I wanted to connect with more people, but I stayed within the relationships that already felt safe.

Eventually, I realised that growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable.

Growth happens when we are willing to try something new, make mistakes, receive feedback and continue learning.

For me, that has meant stepping outside my familiar circles, developing my communication skills, joining new communities, taking on leadership opportunities and becoming more willing to speak even when I do not feel completely confident.

Growth Journey from the Past 1 Year

Today, I am intentionally working on becoming a better and more self-aware version of myself.

My growth journey includes:

  • Building confidence outside my comfort zone.
  • Leadership Qualities and Empowering others
  • Improving my communication skills through writing, speaking and listening.
  • Showing up with greater confidence in both personal and professional settings.
  • Developing my public speaking and leadership abilities.
  • Building deeper connections with people from different backgrounds.
  • Overcoming social and communication barriers.
  • Setting healthier boundaries while remaining true to my values.
  • Responding with greater calmness rather than reacting emotionally.
  • Becoming more self-aware and intentional in my actions.
  • Learning from feedback, challenges and experiences.

I am also learning that growth does not mean becoming a completely different person.

It means becoming a more aware and intentional version of yourself.

I do not want to lose the values that have shaped me—kindness, service, respect and faith. Instead, I want to combine those values with confidence, healthy boundaries, courage and the ability to advocate for myself.

Final Reflection

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that skills and experience alone are not enough.

Growth begins with self-awareness.

We need to understand our strengths, acknowledge our weaknesses, recognise the patterns that may be limiting us and take meaningful action.

Looking back, I sometimes feel surprised that I spent so many years without intentionally focusing on these fundamentals. But I am learning not to regret the past.

Everything I have experienced has contributed to who I am today.

Challenges can be painful, confusing and uncomfortable. Sometimes, when we are going through them, we only see the difficulty.

But challenges can also become powerful teachers.

They can reveal our blind spots.

They can challenge beliefs we have carried for years.

They can push us beyond our comfort zones.

And sometimes, they can introduce us to a version of ourselves we did not know was possible.

My journey is still continuing. I am still learning, still making mistakes and still discovering new things about myself.

But today, I have a clearer understanding of who I am, what has shaped me and what I need to do to continue growing.

And perhaps that is what growth really is.

Not becoming perfect.

But becoming more aware, more courageous and more intentional with each new challenge we face. 🌱
